The hills are alive with the sound of music… in Tajikistan

I wrote this song for my son, Theo, before he was born. Lesleigh and I decided not to find out our baby’s gender – we wanted to be surprised! It was a season of excitement, mystery, and eager anticipation of meeting our little one. We didn’t know much about our baby, but we did know these things…

– our baby would “dance”/kick every time we played music (rock, old country, Irish… the list goes on!)… and sometimes into the wee hours of the morning!

– We had a boy name and a girl name picked out

– We had one photograph: our ultrasound photo

The day after we got our first ultrasound, we closed on the sale of our very first house! The first piece of artwork to go up in our new home was the black and white ultrasound photo. We taped it on the wall of the empty bedroom that would soon be our baby’s nursery. Every day, we’d find ourselves in that room, just staring at the photo, imagining what this little one would be like. And that’s all we had to go on until our due date in Fall of 2018…

This song is for our beautiful boy, Theo. We love you so!

Flash Mob at the Roman Theatre in Amman, Jordan

MUST SEE!! We toured the 1800+ year old, 6,000-seat Roman Theatre in Amman, Jordan, and brought some instruments along to play. FUN ENSUED! When we started playing, a group of people in the distance started clapping, and joined us for a singalong!

SPECIAL STORY AND A BRAND NEW SONG!

I co-wrote this piece with the students at Huntley Elementary School in Appleton, WI, during my recent Artist Residency there.

After brainstorming music and lyric concepts to speak into the city-wide Dignity and Respect campaign that’s currently underway, this is the song we created.

From first idea to completion, I worked with every single class to finish our piece in just four school days. It was so much fun to write with the eager, bright young people at Huntley Elementary School.

I recorded the students’ voices (heard here) during the final assembly and WORLD DEBUT of the song, then brought those tracks to my studio in TN, where I recorded the rest of the arrangement.

Thank you for liking, and sharing!

Excerpt:

Every year my friend Timmy Riordan organizes a songwriting challenge called “The SongBomb.”He asked me to be a part of it this year and I gladly accepted… Our songwriting-inspirational-prompt came from me, this year. I was recently told by a fan that I needed to write a “love song.” It sounded like a good idea. Check it out by clicking one of the links above!

Featured Song of the Week “Owen’s Song”

This week’s featured song is “Owen’s Song.”

**50% of the proceeds go directly to the Bissing Family Relief Fund**

I have been friends with the Medal/Bissing family for many years. Our lives have been somewhat entwined as we grew up in the same town, went to school together, were involved in after-school-extra-curricular activities, and are members of the same church. They’ve been especially supportive of me and my music and have attended more of my shows than anyone I know, except for my own mom and dad.

This past May my friend, Melissa Bissing, tragically lost her son, Owen. He was only 6.5 months old. I sang at the funeral and was a first hand witness of the strength of the entire family.

Owen:
Little warrior, of Sussex, was born on Nov. 10, 2010, in Waukesha, and passed away in the arms of family and friends on May 26, 2011, at Children’s Hospital. He was son to Doug and Melissa Bissing, triplet brother to Weston and Logan, and little brother to Jaden. Grandson to Linda and George Medal and Pamela and David Bissing. Nephew to Rachael Medal, Jake Medal, Sherri Bissing and Eric Bissing. Great-grandson to Alice Vanden Langenberg and Lois Bissing. Great-nephew to Darleen and Ernie Tarmann.

During his short stay on Earth, Owen was a lover. His laid-back personality and smile brought joy to many. His last days were filled with warmth, family and friends. He ended his earthly journey but will live on in others. Owen’s last battle gave his heart, liver and kidneys as a final offering. Owen will be missed by so many, but his story lives on.

I wrote “Owen’s Song” and especially dedicate it to the Bissings and Medals. I also hope that everyone who has experienced loss can find hope and peace in the music and lyrics.

I encourage you to please download the song as it is a fundraiser for the Bissing Family Relief Fund. If you haven’t had the opportunity to read Melissa’s blog, I encourage you to do so. It is some of the most sincere and honest writing I’ve read. Go to bissingfamily.com

Lyrics
As the sun sets in the sky
brightens up the deepest night.
Orange flowers by the road
I smile to myself and know

You’re already home
and I’ll be with you when the day is done.

Somedays I still get bogged down
fog so thick it’s water now.
I carry on. I go on my way.
I think about you every day.

You’re already home
and I’ll be with you when the day is done.

Jesus, can ya hear me sing?
Why is all this happening?
We were all just born to run
we’ll still be dancin’ way after the music’s done.

You’re already home
and I’ll be with you when the day is done.
